Project Introduction
Food Lens is an augmented reality application that promotes transparency by overlaying filters on a restaurant dish with ingredient information (such as origin, food miles or carbon and water footprints). The app uses image recognition and geolocation to retrieve food traceability data. The rising cultural prevalence of consumers snapping photos of their food can be combined with Food Lens to create a crowd-sourced reputation mechanism to nudge restaurants to disclose ingredient sourcing on the app, indirectly influencing upstream decision making to improve transparency. 
 
Innovation: The project uniquely considers consumer behavior and proposes a culturally acceptable and technically feasible solution to influence food traceability and consumer understanding of where their food comes from. 
 
Economic and Social Impact
Economic Impact: Food Lens leverages and magnifies the use of existing traceability infrastructure across the entire food supply chain. The company estimates that the impact for consumers should materialize in comparable returns on investment to food platform services on the market. 
 
Social Impact: Food Lens internalizes the cost of food safety enforcement through crowdsourcing from an already camera-ready consumer base. In doing so, Food Lens raises consumer awareness through existing routines and encourages sustainable and safe practices for food businesses.
 
Help Wanted from Mentors
On the technical side, we want to investigate the current food traceability infrastructure that Walmart has in place and how our prototype can integrate and scale with it. 
 
On the business side, we want to leverage Walmart and its partners’ reach and customer network to onboard restaurants most ready to roll out our prototype.
